We Live & Breath Letterboxing Event - No posts?

From: babybearlb2002 (babybearlb2002@yahoo.com) | Date: 2013-09-05 19:19:37 UTC
Wow, I finally got back to the Republic of Texas today from the event and expected to see many posts to talk list about event........nothing. Was also shocked at how many people did not even know about this talk list that were at event (many of which did not know any of the Founders names either). Shocking. As for me, had a great time meeting these founders and getting to know them. Best part of event was sitting around the dinning hall talking and sharing stories.

After event Silver Eagle and I traveled up to Vermont and found the oldest box (Prayer Rock), and the oldest surviving original box still in place as planted, all in 1 day!!!! Sad thing was no one had been to either box in years.

Thanks to all that put on event, and all that attended! Great fun and great people!!!!

There have been a number of posts on both the Facebook page and the AQ board, so people meet just have found those methods easier from smart phones.

Greetings,

I am delighted to hear that Prayer Rock is still in place. It was washed away by high water quite a few years back, and I didn't know it had been replaced.

To which box were you referring when you said "the oldest surviving original box still in place as planted?"

Best wishes,

Howdy Tom, good to hear from you again.  Wish you could have been at Live & Breathe XV so I could have talked to you some more about your boxes.  When I met you 4 years ago I did not realize you still have boxes from 1998 with original contents, so when you mentioned them last year I made a point of adding them to my itinerary for this trip.  After the Event, my brother Baby Bear and I went to the Braintree area and found the Panther box placed on 11/26/98 and Rolling Rock letterbox, placed on 9/26/98.  Both were doing well with very few visitors.  As far as I know, Rolling Rock is the oldest letterbox with original contents, but if anyone knows of one older I would love to hear about it.

Kudos to you, Silver Eagle, for your continued interest in Letterboxing history! Makes me embarrassed to think I live so close and haven't searched out those boxes.
Love to see the big talklist getting some attention tho! Let's keep it up!

Hi Silver Eagle,

It's been quite a while since anybody stamped into the Rolling Rock Letterbox. And not that many people who make it up to remote Braintree manage to find it. Nice work!

As far as I know too, Rolling Rock is the oldest placed letterbox in the US with the original contents.

I'm glad you all had a good gathering!

There is a box in Wisconsin that was planted on September 26, 1998 and the last time we checked on it, it still contained the original stamp (a custom-made stamp), the original logbook and 2 or 3 additional logbooks.  We hope to check on it again later this fall.  It is the "Cave Point" box in Door County, WI and it was planted by Steven Stary.  The last time we checked on it I took photos of the first couple of pages of the original logbook, and photos of all the current contents.  Luckily it was a fairly large container!  A few years ago I emailed the planter and below  is a portion of his reply.

Debbie,

I first heard about letterboxing about the same time everyone in the US read about it in the Smithsonian article.  A friend of mine read it and thought we should try to get something started in Door Co. where we both worked as summer help at a resort.  I started searching the internet, and made contact with the others just getting started around the country...  Map Surfer, Der Mad Stamper, and many others.  I planted the Cave Point Letterbox, the first box in Wisconsin, on Sept 26, 1998.  My friend, Todd, was the first to find it, though he had no stamp.  After that, I planted a few more around Door Co. and Green Bay (where I live), and even placed one in Madison where I had gone to college.  Another boxer from Madison had the first one in that area.  All the Madison boxes went missing quickly as I recall.  Dierdra placed a lot of boxes around Green Bay, but didn't take weather and people into account.  Some washed away, others were stolen.  She had a series along the East River that when put together formed a map of the area.  It was really well done, but all long gone now.  We both got busy with other activities and jobs, and being the only boxers around it wasn't that much of a challenge, so we lost touch with letterboxing.  I think some of my better letterboxes are still out there though... Cave Point, Mink River, and Cana Island were all intact the last time I was able to check any of those locations.  Most of the rest of the Lighthouse series were casualties of weather, wear, and critters (furry as well as human.)  Back in those days, the message board (or one of the original ones, I think it's moved twice since then) was often contentious with people arguing the fundamentals of what letterboxing should be and how it should be run.  Some things never change, do they?  Some of the early founders left the hobby because of the issues, but I guess many of them are still on the boards.  Maybe now that there are more boxes around, it might be the time to get back into things.

Steven

Yeah, it wasn't easy, but we persevered.  We had planned on also looking for Spears Dam, but the road was closed right before it, and we ran out of time to find Mud Pond.  Maybe next time.

I forgot to mention that we also found your Maine Jct letterbox and Vermont Viking's James P. Taylor letterbox after spending the night at the Inn at Long Trail, site of the first Letterbox Gathering in 1999.  What a fantasy letterboxing adventure!

What a great example of the decisions the early creators had to make, and I love Der Mad Stamper's opinion in this post!  This is the kind of letterbox history I love to hear about so thanks for showing us.

Thanks also for pointing out that Cave Point was placed on the same date as Rolling Rock, thus sharing status as the oldest letterbox with original contents.  Yet another reason for me to visit that area.  Maybe a Great Lakes Gathering is in my future.

Greetings,

I am delighted to hear that Prayer Rock is still in place. It was washed away by high water quite a few years back, and I didn't know it had been replaced.

To which box were you referring when you said "the oldest surviving original box still in place as planted?"

Best wishes,
